Greater Vancouver Therapy Services for Executives and Leaders

Many executives and leaders in Vancouver seek out therapy to enhance their leadership skills and to address issues in their personal lives that may be inhibiting their ability to thrive in their work.

Effective leaders require emotional intelligence and emotional awareness. This means being able to recognize and manage personal emotions, empathize with others, foster trust, collaborate effectively, and manage the stresses that arise in team environments.

Creativity and visionary thinking are also important features of leaders. It is important that leaders address creative blocks that may prevent them from cultivating a vision that engages people within their team and beyond.

Another feature of being an effective leader is decisiveness. It is important to be able to make confident, informed decisions in conditions of uncertainty. Lacking confidence and decisiveness is a common reason why individuals fail to thrive as leaders.

Other psychological factors and obstacles to leadership include imposter syndrome, fear of conflict, and perfectionism.

A common goal of psychodynamic therapy with leaders and executives is to work to overcome imposter syndrome. This often includes exploring the root causes of self-doubt. These can have origins early in life, such as in experiences that were stressful, anxiety-provoking, or traumatic, and potentially damaging to self-esteem.

When it comes to fear of conflict, therapy can help leaders explore their unconscious triggers and feel more comfortable with the range of their emotions that surface in conflictual situations.

Perfectionism often has roots earlier in life, when a person’s current work habits were formed, and when they learned to motivate themselves using impossibly high standards.

If you are considering psychodynamic therapy as a leader, you may also be considering executive coaching. There are some differences between the two approaches, and it is important to consider which is the best alternative for you.

  • Psychotherapy focuses on resolving psychological challenges through introspection. In the psychodynamic approach, this often includes looking back to formative experiences that occurred earlier in life.
  • Coaching does not have this psychological, introspective, focus; it tends to be more focused on the here-and-now and the development of actionable strategies and skills.

The results-oriented nature of coaching appeals to many leaders. But other leaders find it limiting, recognizing that the root causes of their concerns may require a more exploratory approach aiming at the fostering of insight.

Common Goals and Benefits of Psychodynamic Therapy for Vancouver Residents

Work to understand and address psychological symptoms

Unaddressed depression, anxiety, stress, and other types of emotional distress can reduce life and satisfaction. These have also been found to be correlated with physical health problems.

Increasing self-knowledge

Getting to know ourselves better includes reflecting on how our past influences our present lives, getting to know longstanding personality traits, becoming familiar with fears that have been holding back progress, and figuring out what we most want in our lives.

Reflecting on relationships

Many people benefit from taking some time to think about their relationships, exploring themes such as closeness, distance, trust, and communication.

Self-expression

People often find that developing the capacity to talk freely and openly over the course of a therapy process can help them gain comfort exercising creativity and self-expression in various other areas of their lives.

Client Experiences of Psychodynamic Therapy

Everyone is different, and some people will find themselves especially drawn to psychodynamic therapy. A study in the journal Psychotherapy Research found that clients who most appreciate psychodynamic therapy are drawn to several features of this approach.

Psychodynamic therapy aims to help people gain insight through exploration, so they can understand themselves better than before

It seeks to help individuals develop a more coherent life story

It aims to help people foster self-acceptance through understanding

Integrative Therapy for Executives and Leaders

We offer an integrative approach to therapy for executives and leaders tailored to the needs of the individual. In addition to psychodynamic therapy, clients will sometimes benefit from approaches based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

CBT for executives and leaders focuses on identifying and restructuring unhelpful thought patterns that may hinder decision-making or performance. It also emphasizes building coping mechanisms to handle high-pressure situations effectively, and using behavioral experiments to face difficult or uncomfortable situations that have been avoided.

Online and Telephone Therapy for Executives and Leaders in Vancouver and BC-wide
